Summary

In “Escape,” the women come to a consensus that Frans will have Johannes arrested, and that Johannes needs to flee the city. That night, while examining her cabinet, she hears Johannes enter the house. Nella rushes to greet him, and alerts him to the fact that he must leave as soon as possible. She thanks him for all he has done, but tries to hurry him away. Johannes, who seems tired, laments the laws that have prevented him from loving another man. Johannes gives Nella a list of people who may be interested in purchasing his sugar. That night, Nella is the only one to see him off.
