Summary
In Chapter 1, dated October 18, 1818, Elizabeth Boylston is preparing the body of her close friend, Abigail Adams, for burial. She and Abigail have been dear friends for more than 40 years. Elizabeth recalls Abigail's final days, including a brief hope that she was recovering. Her final words were to her husband, John Adams. She says she does not like to leave him alone, but he assures her they will be reunited soon. Elizabeth cares for her, but Abigail does not speak again and dies. Years earlier, Abigail had seen Elizabeth preparing a body for burial. She had asked Elizabeth to promise she would do the same for her (Abigail). Elizabeth says Abigail will likely outlive her, but she promises Abigail that will if necessary. Elizabeth then says that she wants to tell the story of the early years of her friendship with Abigail.
