Sarah McGinniss is up early so that she can work on her new book, The Club, while her four-year-old sleeps. Sarah has trouble concentrating. Sarah is uneasy with the success she found after the publication of her first non-fiction book, A Mother's Kindness, feeling pressured to write an equally successful second book. The book also brought other changes to her life, in the form of a divorce and the move cross country to New York City. Now Sarah reads in the paper that Alexandre St.-Germain, a primary figure in her new book, has been gunned down at an exclusive Manhattan club. All this makes it impossible for her to concentrate today.
