Summary
Chapter 7 – On Christmas morning, Maren is doing well after a cup of crushed shark’s tooth, powdered mussel shells, and dried kelp. It is snowing outside. Auntie, Clara, Maren, and Osbert are all in a very good mood. Scarff and O’Neill send Zedekiah the horse to live with Auntie, Clara, and Maren. They promise to visit in the spring. Zedekiah also bears other gifts, including a golden locket with an apple tree engraving for Maren, an illuminated book of herbal recipes for Auntie, and a small painting done by O’Neill for Clara. Clara is jealous of Maren’s locket, though she does like her painting. Auntie reminds the girls to be grateful for all they have in their lives. A private letter for Clara has been written by O’Neill. In the letter, he explains that Scarff is unwell, that he hopes...
