Summary

In Chapter 9 Mr. Hancock goes to see his newly arrived mermaid, but finds the Captain, Tysoe Jones, out of sorts. The mermaid is not what they expected, and every person who looks upon her gets sad. In Chapter 10, Angelica loses her child and begs Sukie not to tell Mr. Hancock. By May of 1786 and Chapter 12, Angelica still has not told Mr. Hancock she has lost the baby, and Mr. Hancock has started to spend more and more time observing the mermaid. The lease is up on the building where Mr. Hancock keeps the mermaid down by the docks, so he is forced to move her to the grotto at his home. The men of the docks blame Mr. Hancock and his strange cargo for a rash of negative occurrences.

In Chapter 13, the Hancocks move to their new home, but everyone is depressed...
