Summary

Mrs. Chappell rushes to the home of the Christmas party in Chapter 16 after she hears of Polly’s disappearance. She interviews Elinor first, who believes her friend has been kidnapped, but Mrs. Chappell believes she has run off on her own accord. Mr. Hancock continues to visit Angelica and ascertains she might be in trouble. She collapses and cries on him in Chapter 17. In Chapter 18 a secretary of the men who threw the Christmas party threatens Mrs. Chappell that she must return the 200 guineas paid to her for ruining the fun. Elinor, whom Mrs. Chappell is still interviewing, learns her price from the exchange.

Mr. Hancock tells Angelica about his wife and child who died, but Rockingham shows up and kicks him out. In Chapter 20, he fights with Angelica and then tells her he is giving her up. Angelica starts pawning her...
