Summary
In Chapter 9, the girls return to Mrs. Chappell’s house. Polly tries to unload the madame’s chamber pot with the footman Simeon, but drops it on the ground and splashes his immaculate uniform instead. In Chapter 10, Rockingham announces that his uncle has called him away and that, “Somebody has dripped poison into his ear” (241). Rockingham suspects one of Angelica’s old boy friends and gives her use of a carriage while he is gone, but forbids her to see any other men or go to parties even though it is Christmas. He says he could be gone a few weeks or a month and gives them 20 pounds.
In Chapter 11, Simeon visits Polly in her room to give her contact information for people who help runaway slaves escape.
