The Whale
The whale in Maren's recurring dreams is a symbol of dangerous love, specifically her love for Ursa. Like her feelings of love for Ursa, Maren is initially afraid of the whale. She is disturbed the physical, visceral feel of her dreams, including the smells and tastes. And yet, Maren finds herself in love and craving these things about Ursa. Just as she begins to touch, hold, and protect the whale in her dreams, Maren becomes comfortable enough with Ursa to touch her and hold her, and also protects her the same way she protects the whale in her dreams. Maren herself makes this connection toward the end of the novel, when she associates the smell of Ursa's dress with the smell of the whale.
