Summary
The day of the ducking, Maren arrives with a small crowd, though Ursa does not come. Maren watches the Lensmann arrive. They ask Kirsten to confess, which she does not. They tie her with rope as Maren watches helplessly. They throw her in the water and she manages to wriggle up, which the Lensmann takes as proof of her being a witch. They take her back to prison to be tried for witchcraft. The day of the sentencing, Maren and the rest of the village arrive at the court to watch the proceedings. She sees huge crowds, Lensmenn from other places and representatives of the King.
