Summary
Maren has still not delivered the finished pelts. She feels uneasy about the exchange with the commissioner about the Sámi rites, and worries for Diinna’s safety. Finally, Mamma chastises Maren for leaving the pelts and Maren agrees to take them over. Maren goes to the door, where Ursa tells her that Cornet is at the kirke with the Pastor. Maren goes to set the pelts on the floor and looks at the dank, sparse appearance of the house. Maren gently tells Ursa that she needs to put in fresh wood for the fire, which Kirsten had already placed in the store room, when Ursa suddenly grows faint, admitting that the house lacks fresh water and they have finished the bread. Maren puts Ursa in bed and leaves to get fresh water. Maren goes back to her own house to retrieve some...
