Summary
Six months after the storm, Kirsten gets in front of the kirke and notes that they must become more self-sufficient, beginning with going back to fishing. She states they need twenty women, and offers herself as the first volunteer. Maren and ten other women volunteer, though Kirsten notes that this is only enough crew for two boats. The women arrive the next Wednesday at the harbor and head off to sea in one boat. The trip is physically demanding on Maren and the other women, but they are overjoyed to haul in two large nets full of all kinds of fish. The women head back to shore, feeling optimistic. Even Toril is happy at the catch. That night, Maren dreams of the whale again, but instead of being beached it is in the ocean.
