Summary

After re-parking the car, Basil "goes back inside" and finds Mags "slumped against the dishwasher" (160). Basil takes Otis's cape out of her handbag, shoves it in his pocket, and takes the pizza out of the oven. After serving two plates, he takes the food and the cape "into Otis's room and shuts the door" (160). They sit on the floor and eat together. Basil ties the cape around his son's neck and uses it to wipe Otis's tears. After eating, Basil watches Otis play with his toys while imagining driving Otis to the airport and flying to Muriel's appearance on The Today Show (161). He imagines an elaborate and wonderful reunion with Muriel. He sees himself and Otis on stage with her, and all of the wonderful things she will say.
