French is a young boy when society collapses and Native Americans are persecuted for their ability to dream. He is 16 when the main story line of this novel takes place. He has a grasp of what is happening in the world. He holds on to the hope of a future in which he will no longer have to be a nomad, constantly running from government officials. He is idealistic in some ways, though he is able to face the world realistically. He is devoted to the family group led by Miig, and he kills one of the men he holds responsible for RiRi's death.
