Summary

Chapter 49

Arachne starts to descend on Annabeth, who realizes that she is too weak to fight. She remembers that Arachne got turned into a spider because she was prideful. Annabeth starts to compliment how beautiful her work is, which gives Arachne pause. She explains that she was tasked with redesigning Mount Olympus and wishes that she could use some of the art that Arachne has created. At first, Arachne thinks this is just a trick. Annabeth points out that Athena all but disowned her and sent her to die. She has no loyalty to her mother, who she adds was just jealous of how good Arachne’s art is.

This pleases Arachne who decides to spare Annabeth. Annabeth goes on to say that she wants Arachne to create a giant magnificent piece of art with her silk. Arachne laments that she wouldn’t...
