Summary

In Chapter 18, Faye followed the monk to a Buddhist temple. She thought about the baby (Zoe) that she had when she was fourteen, and that her parents had given up for adoption. The monk (Shi) encouraged her to engage with the past through meditation, but noises outside disturbed her. The Japanese were dropping bombs, and had hit an orphanage. As others fled for safety, Faye headed into the danger zone.

In Chapter 19, Dorothy left Annabel safe with friends before heading for the clinic. Dr. Shedhorn refused to resume Dorothy’s therapy because another storm was coming – and because Louis had initiated legal action against her continued treatment – but she provided some pills that would stimulate her brain to a lesser degree in the meantime. As the weather worsened, Dorothy took refuge in a Buddhist temple, where she swallowed all the pills before falling...
