Summary

Chapter 5 is set in 2014. In Seattle, Greta was accepting an award for the feminist dating app that she had co-created (Syren). Afterwards, she went to see her parents, who informed her that they had visited the Shanghai Marriage Market on her behalf. When they produced a photo of an attractive man, Greta reluctantly agreed to go on the date they had arranged.

In Chapter 6, Dorothy learned that Annabel had been behaving strangely at preschool, showing signs of the dissociative disorder that Dorothy herself struggled with. On her way to an experimental therapy appointment, she encountered the friendly police officer again, and then Graham – a friend and former colleague. As she arrived at the site of her appointment, Dorothy recalled Louis’s scorn and disapproval when she had tried to explain the idea of inherited trauma.
