Summary
Carnehan continued his recollection of the events in Kafiristan. He explained that for the next six months, Dravot learned their language and thought of plans. Meanwhile, Carnehan taught agriculture, and create rope bridges over ravines. Dravot was respectful of Carnehan in public; the people feared him, but “they loved Dan” (39). The men nicknamed chiefs after Englishmen, and he created a “Council of War” with four high-ranking priests (39). They sent Carnehan with 100 men to trade with other countries for “hand-made Martini rifles” (39). Upon return, Carnehan trained their growing army. Soon, Dravot told Carnehan that rather than create a nation, he would create an empire. He believed that the people were also English.
