Summary

As Chapter 1 begins, Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim (the members of the Thursday Murder Club) have just concluded a meeting. The topic of conversation was a cold case in which a man was not convicted, though he may have committed the crime for which he was accused. Joyce wonders whether she should get a dog. Ron and Ibrahim give their opinions. They think the dog's age should be considered because Joyce should not die before the dog. Elizabeth is distracted by a letter she has received in which a dead man wants to meet her. She advises that Joyce get a rescue dog that is already old.
