Summary
Part 1, “Process,” begins with a two-page spread of Kobe, sweating and in warm-up clothes, preparing to make a free-throw.
In “When It Came to Basketball, I Had No Fear,” the central image is of is of a younger Kobe in an empty stadium in the middle of a practice. In the accompanying text, Kobe describes his awareness of the need to think of skill acquisition in terms of its long-term benefits. He describes long practice hours as a child, and a lifelong determination to be the best. He also describes his determination to figure out not only the most dominant way to play, but the most effective way to dominate individual opponents. He describes that process of figuring things out as “the fun part” (22).
