Summary
In Chapter 19, Abel tells Eustace about the events that occurred at Mr. Crowe’s manor after Clara was abducted. He explains that Cromer would not give him explicit details about the relationship between Chastern and Crowe. However, when Abel snuck into the library, he discovered a letter from Chastern with a dried rose pressed within. Eustace agrees to help carry out Abel’s plan for retribution with the hopes that he can save Clara from imprisonment. In Chapter 20, Clara begins to carve words into the stones that are hidden beneath her bed, with the tie pin. She practices her words in her head, before she carves, “while standing at the window, where she looks out, only half-seeing” (302). Clara knows that she has to be careful not to raise Naziere’s suspicions and only crawls under the bed after she hears him exit...
