Summary

Part Six opens with a quote from Shakespeare, addressing the fact that grief “softens the mind.” The quote ends with the advice to “Think therefore on revenge, and cease to weep.”

In Chapter 1, Mariana and Zoe stand silently in the rain. Mariana accuses Zoe of lying. She says she and Sebastian were in love. They began to have sex when Zoe turned 15, during a visit to Athens. She says Sebastian married Mariana to be near Zoe and for the money. Mariana runs.

In Chapter 2, Zoe says Mariana cannot escape. Zoe says Mariana's father saw Sebastian and Zoe having sex in the olive grove and threatened to tell Mariana, and Sebastian killed him (Mariana thought he died of a heart attack). Sebastian wanted all of the money for himself. He knew that if Mariana died, police would look at the husband...
