Summary

On a cold night, Conn comes down from the attic to sleep in front of the fireplace. He wakes up to Nevery “nudging me with his foot” (330). Conn can tell that Nevery’s meeting with the magisters went poorly. When Conn asks about it, Nevery confronts him about his connection to Underlord Crowe. Nevery says that, at the meeting, Pettivox informed him that Conn is actually Crowe’s nephew and that, at one point, Conn actually lived and worked with Crowe. Conn is unable to deny the allegations. Nevery, furious, tells Conn to leave his home and that he is no longer his apprentice. Conn leaves, disheartened. On his way out, he runs into Benet, who is concerned to see Conn heading into the city. Conn doesn’t tell Benet anything, but internally decides that he will go to the Underlord’s mansion...
