Summary
In Part II, Chapter 1 because Giovanna wasn't strong enough to oppose [her parents’] always well-ordered world" she began lying to them (50). The visit with Vittoria had changed her. She told her father they had talked about nothing but school and friends, that she did not want to see her again.
In Chapter 2, Giovanna made plans to meet Vittoria again, but withheld the truth from her parents. Though she had said otherwise, Giovanna and Vittoria had talked of many things, including the family. Vittoria asked why Giovanna was not wearing the bracelet she had gifted her at birth. When Giovanna acted confused, Vittoria scoffed. She knew Andrea and Nella had never given it to her. She said many unkind things about Andrea and Nella, commending Giovanna for being like her instead of her parents. Then she talked of her old love, Enzo, blaming Andrea...
