The Connection between Sutton and Emma
The twin connection is an important part of the story because it sets the scene for Sutton to oversee Emma's efforts to find Sutton's killers. Emma and Sutton have never met and don't know the existence of the other until after Sutton's death. Sutton finds herself attached to Emma upon her first moments of consciousness after her death though she doesn't initially know why that connection exists. Emma is willing to accept the theory of a twin sister because she's sometimes felt that connection prior to considering the possibility that she and Sutton are twins. The fact that they are almost identical makes it possible for Emma to step into Sutton's life without alerting anyone to the swap.
