Prologue through Chapter 3 Summary
In the prologue, Sutton Mercer wakes in a claw-footed bathtub. She doesn't know where she is or how she came to be there. She has very limited memory other than her name and that she lives in Tucson, Arizona. She believes someone might have "slipped" her some kind of drug. She hears a boy's voice call out for Emma and a girl who is also in the bathroom answers that she's busy. Sutton looks down at her body and says it looks as if she's "flickering on and off," solidifying the idea that she's been drugged. She speaks to Emma but Emma doesn't respond, even when Sutton yells. She looks at Emma's face in the mirror and realizes they are exactly the same in appearance. She also realizes she can't see herself in the mirror. She feels herself slipping...
