Summary
Pritchard goes to see Anna. She is gaunt. He remembers when she was with child, but she had lost her baby. It was buried in a grave on the terrace at Seaview. Pritchard asks about her health. She says that she has recovered and did not attempt to take her life. She has also given up prostitution, while she mourns the loss of her baby. He asks why she did not come to him for help. He believes the opium was poisoned and wants to test what is left of the lump. Anna says that she has eaten the rest, but he does not believe her because her eyes are clear. He begins to search her room. He lunges at her when he cannot find the opium. She pulls out a muff pistol...
