Chapter Eight Summary
Mr. Slump is in a foul mood and tired of getting letters from Aimée. In this letter, she recounts her engagement three weeks ago to her British friend, but she writes that he has not yet become a minister, as he had planned to do. Also, her friend at work has become morose and even mean, which bothers her, while her British friend seems unnaturally interested in the details of her work. Mr. Slump interrupts his reading to comment that women never can let any man go. At work, Aimée keeps receiving lovely poems from Dennis that salve the wounds of their arguments from the previous night.
