Wood Place

Wood Place is Samuel Pinchard’s plantation in Georgia. This is where most of the Songs are set. Samuel acquires the land from Micco, who is of Creek descent. Wood Place is where Aggie lives nearly all her life and is a maternal figure amongst the slaves. She is particularly maternal to Nick, Samuel’s son by Mamie, on Wood Place. Nick eventually runs away from the plantation, though. Samuel has a small house built, referred to as the Left House, on the plantation; this is where he sets up young slaves to live so he can rape them. The Left House is eventually set on fire. Ailey eventually focuses on the Pinchard family and Wood Place for her graduate research.
