Summary
Emily was sent to the North London Mental Health Trust’s Mother and Baby Unit at the beginning of Chapter 40. She fought with the woman taking care of her, Shazia. Shazia reassured Emily that she understood Emily was scared, angry, and resistant to being there. Emily, exhausted, gave in to Shazia’s offer of tranquilizers while Charlie was in the nursery.
Emily’s emotions fluctuated between deep love for Charlie and missing her daughter. With treatment, Emily began to accept her diagnosis of postpartum psychosis. Her belief that her baby was a girl during her pregnancy partially contributed to her mental health situation. Emily began to adore Charlie.
