Summary
Chapter 14 begins as Emma awakens, crying that she misses someone “with whom she will never wake up again” (102). She realizes that Leo was looking for her files and moves them to Ruby’s room, realizing she needs to get rid of them.
While Emma is at work teaching postgraduate students, she notices three missed calls from an unknown number as well as a man in a baseball cap staring at her from outside her classroom. Feeling threatened, Emma daydreams of the beach with Ruby and being “closer, perhaps, to him,” continuing to conceal the identity of an important person from her past (105).
In Chapter 15, Emma travels with Ruby to Northumberland. She calls the person with whom she is meeting. They plan to meet in a cottage close to Emma’s hotel. The person on the phone mentions he is “not used to talking...
