The pantry is a symbol of secrets and deception. When Rukhsana forces Ariana to hide inside the pantry, she sends Ariana the message that their relationship is shameful and needs to be hidden.

Slap Mark

The slap mark on Ariana's face is a symbol of homophobia. Rukhsana's mother is so appalled and disgusted by the love between Rukhsana and Ariana that she reacts with violence without thinking.
