Summary

In “Chapter Six,” Rukhsana met Ariana, Jen, and Rachel at the mall. When Ariana approached Rukhsana and kissed her cheek, Rukhsana instantly shied away, worried that someone would see and tell her parents. Ariana ran into the bathroom and locked herself in to cry because she hated feeling like she was not wanted. Jen and Rachel scolded Rukhsana and told her she was being dramatic. They said her parents would get over it if she just told them the truth. They took Ariana out to get yogurt and Rukhsana went home, determined to tell her mother the truth so as not to lose Ariana. But when she arrived, her aunt and uncle were over for dinner. Rukhsana sat at the table and listened as they gossiped about a friend’s gay son and the shame of it.
