Summary

The next day is Oak's second birthday: although he had a large party last year, the parents decide to skip the party this year because of Grumps. Sumac, who is avoiding eye contact with everyone, especially Grumps, tells Aspen that the plan to convince Grumps to ask to leave is cancelled for the moment. Aspen tells her that she had stopped participating in the plan because when she left her pet rat, Slate, in Grumps's bed to make him panic, he only petted it and smiled.

For Oak's birthday, the family takes a picture of him hanging in a cloth bag, which is a tradition inspired by Sic. They also paint his silhouette against the shed and each family member writes Oak a letter about what they love about him.
