Summary

In Chapter 32: “Matthew,” he realizes that GG held onto this story for 87 years, and she sends him away. As he writes notes about her story, he receives a message from his best friend, Josh, who promises to visit the next day. Then, Matthew gives GG chocolate when she finds a letter postmarked to Helen Lomachenko.

In Chapter 33: “Helen,” she shows Ruth that the New York Times did write her back, but rejected her concerns because everyone she interviewed are second-hand accounts. This enrages Helen, as Duranty never talked to any survivors either. Suddenly, she realizes that if she finds a way to bring Nadiya to Brooklyn, then she could share her story. Since the USSR is only concerned about drafting boys for war, Helen is certain that Nadiya has a chance to escape. Ruth promises to continue looking for first-hand accounts and calls...
