Summary

Chapter 1

The book begins in New York City, during the year 2000. The main character, Josef, is getting ready for the wedding of his grandson. When he arrives at the wedding he’s surprised to see that the bride’s grandmother looks like someone from his past. When he gets the chance he goes to greet her. She doesn’t seem to remember him, but he keeps pressing when he notices the numbers tattooed into her arm. He identifies her as Lenka, his wife whom he though was long lost.

Chapter 2

This chapter starts a few weeks before the wedding, documenting Lenka’s thoughts. She has a painting that she's kept hidden for 60 years that she decides she wants to give as a wedding gift. This takes her back to her childhood. (flashback) She was raised in Prague. Her father was a glassworker who...
