Summary

Don leaves his apartment, carrying his heavy typewriter in its case. He is grateful for the cool temperature of the weather. He arrives at the nearest pawnshop and is dismayed to find it inexplicably closed. He continues to walk, stopping at every pawnshop he can find. However, they are all closed. The day grows hotter, and Don feels that he cannot walk much further. Eventually, he sees the owners of one of the closed pawnshops. The owners explain that it is Yom Kippur, and that the pawn (which are mostly owned by either Jewish people or Irish people) customarily close on Yom Kippur and St. Patrick’s Day.
