Summary

After Preston and his group left T1, the site remained untouched for about a year. Many soldiers began to develop leishmaniasis as well. The exaction of the cache of objects became a priority, and Chris Fisher began to assemble an archeological team to excavate it while also suffering from leishmaniasis. The academic controversy about the site continued to rage, and Juan Carlos gave a talk in Tegucigalpa at which people showed up to heckle. Chris Fisher needed a million dollars to return to the site, and Steve Elkins and Bill Benenson helped raise the money. National Geographic hired Preston to cover the excavation, which began in January of 2016.
