Summary
For 75 years, Morde's tales have given rise to the myth of the lost city, and the tale even became part of Honduran tradition. In 1960, the government of Honduras designated 2,000 square miles of Mosquitia as the Cuidad Blanca Archeological Reserve, and, in 1980, UNESCO named it the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve and, two years later, declared it a World Heritage site. Explorers continued to make unfounded claims about having found the lost city, while archeologists continued to believe it might exist. Steve Morgan, a collector of stories, first introduced Steve Elkins to the story of the lost city. Morgan liked to collect stories of lost cites and shipwrecks, and he had actually found some shipwrecks. Elkins ran an L.A. business that rented out camera equipment, and he also became a television producer.
