Notebook
Caroline’s notebook is a symbol of various things including her existence and her purpose. It is also a symbol of self-incrimination. The contents of Caroline’s notebook trace her change from a woman focused on the needs and wants of her husband to one who is trying to re-establish her identity. It opens with a listing of the itinerary she and James put together for their anniversary trip to London. After Caroline first learns about James’s affair, she cannot even look at the notes they made without being angry. Later, Caroline begins making notes in her notebook concerning her research into the history of the blue vial. This research represents Caroline’s rediscovery of the things she once enjoyed before she was married.
