Summary
In Chapter 16, at lunch with James later that day, James told Caroline the woman with whom he had the affair had been moved to another department. It seemed he was trying to lay blame instead of taking responsibility for what had happened. James claimed he had the affair because their lives had become so predictable. He inferred Caroline had wanted a predictable relationship. However, Caroline reminded him how he had discouraged her from going to graduate school. Caroline realized the affair was not the only factor that was making her doubt her relationship with James. She asked him to leave her alone while they were in London so she could have some space and work out her priorities.
