Summary
In Chapter 19, Gamache received the two-word reply “It’s cosmic” (163) from Stuart about the photos that Gamache e-mailed to him. Neither Gamache, Beauvoir, nor Reine-Marie could understand what the reply might mean.
The narration shifts to Scotland where Stuart believed he recognized something in one of Peter’s paintings. Walking toward the Garden of Cosmic Speculation Stuart started to send Gamache a message but got no further than the first two words when he slipped in wet grass and fell down an embankment. When Stuart landed, he was unable to breathe and thought he was dead. He finally pulled in a breath and realized he was just stunned. Stuart took pictures of what he saw, sights he compared to a netherworld. When he looked at the photos later, Stuart realized that Peter had done a better job of capturing the place with paint...
