Manson visited Dr. Anton Szandor LaVey, founder and high priest of the Church of Satan. What no one in Manson's life had understood about Satanism was that followers not the worship of Satan. Satan didn't exist. Satanism was the worship of one's self or the only one responsible for his or her own deeds, whether it was good or evil. In the eerie setting of LaVey's dark and opulent home, Manson did not feel frightened but rather excited. When LaVey finally greeted him, he told Manson he admired his name since "Marilyn" and "Manson" represented the co-existence of two extremes which was what Satanism was all about.
