Summary
In "First Thing," Helen and her newborn, Rose, are working together on the project of sleep. This, like all new things, is a continuation. There is a play mat on the floor, and this changes the dynamic of the entire living room. Helen realizes that she is the adult and the one who gets to decide what will happen. Helen starts to walk around her apartment with the baby as she watches people outside. She walks in a regular path through her home. Helen enjoys the cover of a book which has a man studying on the cover. Helen is introducing herself to things in her apartment as well. Her favorite part of her home is her window.
