Matthew Venn

Matthew, who is married to Jonathan, is the narrative's protagonist and the detective who is in charge of finding Simon's killer. Ross and Jen are key members of his team. Dorothy is his mother, and Oldham is his boss. Dennis Salter served as Matthew's mentor when Matthew was younger.

Matthew stands by his principles. When he went to University and discovered that many of the teachings of the Brethren were not things that he could agree with and understood why people stayed, he voluntarily left. At the same time, he likes rules and has a sense of duty. This is why he joins the police force. He is good at his job, but the guilt he feels about leaving his family and his mother's reaction cause him to worry that he is not competent enough to do the job well.
