Summary
In Chapter 8, “Spinning It Out: Austria, 1945,” Penrose details Lee’s experiences in the “period following armistice” (130). She returned to London where Vogue welcomed her back. However, Lee struggled to readjust to this life. Her “relations with Roland were strained” and she returned to Paris (130). She had frequent bouts of depression while here, through which Dave helped her. Penrose includes one of her letters to Roland, which describes her unrest as “winged serpents” (133). Roland often wrote to Lee but she infrequently responded. Eventually, she returned to the road with Dave, traveling to Salzburg and Vienna. In Vienna, she reported on the hospitals’ struggles.
Penrose holds that Lee “was killing time in Vienna” (139). From here, she traveled to Hungary. Because travel to the Balkans was nearly impossible, Lee welcomed the challenge, eventually securing the necessary travel permits. She and Dave crossed the Hungarian border in...
