Summary
In Chapter 9, when Faraday went to Hundreds Hall next, he found Caroline and Mrs. Ayers outside examining a blocked drain pipe. When Caroline and Faraday were alone for a moment, he felt a charge of emotion between them. Mrs. Ayers seemed to notice a change between the two. She told Faraday in private that she was surprised Caroline had said nothing to her about her interest in Faraday. After this visit, Faraday was away for two weeks at a conference in London.
During the time Faraday was away, Caroline and her mother discovered the saloon had been badly damaged by a leak caused by the blocked drainpipe.
