Summary

In Chapter 5, Faraday describes the changes at Hundreds Hall since Gyp died. All of the women living there reporting having thought they heard the dog or saw him. Faraday noticed that in addition to Caroline’s sadness, Roderick seemed to be more troubled and perhaps even afraid of something. One day when Faraday visited the house, Roderick had a black eye. He claimed he had left his door open and walked into it in the dark. A few days later Roderick sprained his wrist when he tripped over a footstool that had mysteriously moved into his path.

Faraday began to suspect that Roderick was perhaps having seizures. When he talked to Caroline about it, she took him to show him what looked like a scorch mark on the back of Roderick’s door. Roderick claimed not to know how the mark got there...
