Summary
“Duchess” begins Chapter 7. Duchess described Woolly’s excitement when he recognized his placemat at the Howard Johnson restaurant as a map of Illinois. When Duchess returned from the restroom, he discovered that Woolly and his placemat were gone. Woolly was in Emmett’s car, turning onto the Lincoln Highway. Duchess looked at his copy of the map and saw that it indicated there was a statue of Abraham Lincoln in the town’s square.
“Woolly” is the next section in Chapter 7. When Woolly located the statue, he believed it was an ideal likeness because it captured Lincoln’s stature as a man as well as his moral courage. As Woolly studied the statue he remembered how his great-grandfather had insisted his family members be at the camp in the Adirondacks to celebrate the Fourth of July.
