Summary
On their drive to Utrecht, Carl and Futh talk about bad feelings and premonitions. Carl invites Futh to stay with his mother in Utrecht this week. Futh is thoughtful about it, but hesitates to answer and suggests that he will see Carl again when they ride the ferry together on Saturday. Futh remembers that when he left home, his father moves in with Futh's aunt Frieda. At the time, Futh got his driver’s license in his forties, Futh relied on hitchhiking and public transport. This worried Frieda who believed he was being reckless and "an accident waiting to happen" (31). She also asked Futh not to go on his trip to Germany, warning him to keep his valuables safe and to be careful.
