Forgiveness
Forgiveness is one of the key themes which runs throughout the novel and contributes largely to the development of the characters involved in each instance. As the narrator, Lucy’s accounts of forgiveness are the ones we get the most insight into, and she is able to give more detail than the other characters might be able to portray. Her relationship with Gabe is somewhat characterized by forgiveness as he consistently lets her down, only to come running back to her at a later time. When he initially breaks her heart by leaving New York for his career without consulting her about it, it takes her a very long time to begin to heal.
